"One of the hottest groups around. Fun, exciting and always breathtakingly musical!"
— Tim Ferchen

Ensemble

Awake Percussion was founded in Helsinki in 2016. The group’s aim is first and foremost to give audiences the opportunity to hear the most fascinating music of our times, performed with the utmost conviction. Commissioning new music and working in close collaboration with composers is a central part of the ensemble’s artistic vision. Awake Percussion’s unique and artistically coherent concert programmes are all constructed around new works commissioned by the group and Finnish premieres of other works. The quartet of players comprises the four board members of the Percussion Chamber-Music Society, an organisation whose aims include furthering audiences’ awareness of percussion music and providing percussion teaching right across Finland.

The ensemble’s name, Awake Percussion, is a nod to its direct ancestor, the Breath Ensemble which operated under the auspices of the Percussion Chamber-Music Society. The choice of the word ‘awake’ is important as it refers, on the one hand, to the very literal awakening of the Chamber-Music Society’s activities, which had dwindled in recent years. More than that, the word reminds us of where it all began and says something of the group’s mission to remain constantly ‘awake’ in the ever changing and developing worlds of music and art.

 The Musicians

Jerry Piipponen

Lahti - New York - Helsinki

The connoisseur and aesthete of the group. Sound colours are every bit as important as having exactly the right instruments and stands in exactly the right place. Jerry wastes hours perfecting details and takes great pleasure in things that are perfectly planned and executed. In addition to the details, he has an appreciation for beauty, imagination and surprise in music.

Lauri Pekkarinen

Liminka - Berliini - Lappeenranta

The group’s very own ‘Action Man’; if rehearsals take a sudden detour, Lauri is the first one to lose his cool and tries his best to shift focus back to the task at hand. Lauri is responsible for the group’s literary merits in all manner of media outlets and grant applications.

The sheer variety of contemporary music Lauri has discovered through the percussion quartet has had a lasting impact on him. At home he now rarely listens to classical music; cooking to the sound of a heavy rap beat is much more fun!

Petteri Kippo

Kälviä - Helsinki - Kirkkonummi

A percussion concert would be nothing without the percussion instruments themselves, and someone has to get them to the right place at the right time. Petteri enjoys driving and, besides, he is the only member of the quartet to hold a heavy-vehicle licence. This is why more often than not he can be spotted behind the wheel whenever the group has to move instruments.

This penchant for practicality can be seen on stage too; Petteri has even been known to start moving instruments and stands halfway through a concert. “Onwards and upwards” and “a jump in the dark” are phrases that best describe Petteri’s mentality as a player and his choice of instruments – in his own imaginary practice sessions, at least. He’s really not all that good when it comes to metaphorical turns of speech, but still manages to employ them far more than is necessary.

Walter Witick

Kokkola - Amsterdam - Helsinki

When it comes to practice, Walter Witick is a true professional. He can go for days without seeing sunlight at all – and that’s not just because he lives in Finland but because he spends far too much of his spare time in a rehearsal room trying to crack all kinds of technical and musical challenges.

In addition to chamber music, mallet solos and orchestral playing are close to Walter’s heart.

The Society

The Percussion Chamber Music Society was founded in 1988 as a subsect of the work of the Breath Ensemble. The final concert of the chamber-music ensemble in its former incarnation was in 2007 at founding member Tim Ferchen’s 60th birthday concert. The association then fell silent for almost a decade until the current committee revived the group’s work. The primary aims of the Percussion Chamber Music Society are to produce concerts of the highest calibre and provide percussion teaching right across Finland.

The current committee comprises percussionists Petteri Kippo, Lauri Pekkarinen, Jerry Piipponen and Walter Witick, who have studied at renowned institutions around the world including the Sibelius Academy, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Universität der Künste in Berlin, and the Manhattan School of Music. Besides chamber music, the committee members hold positions in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lappeenranta City Orchestra, and at the Espoo Music Institute. In addition, all four are active as freelancers in the Finnish orchestral and chamber-music scenes.
